Updated February 2002
We've tried a lot of products over the
years, and this page is dedicated to sharing with you the best one's we
have found! Please drop me an email if you have good product suggestions!
Triple Crown Horse Clothes
Probably one of the best manufacturers of horse clothing! Customized horsewear including blankets, sheets, coolers, etc. You can't buy it off the rack, this stuff is made to order for your horse! You can have all sorts of little frills added, custom colors, piping, tail straps, logos, cuts, weights, whatever! I personally think their coolers and dress sheets are stunning.
They also make drapes, tack trunk covers, saddle bags, boot bags, you name it! Triple Crown Custom
Del-Mar Pedigree Web site
While we realize this is not an actual product, this site is AWESOME. Pedigrees to the top horses in the world, including photos! You can add your horse to the database, including photos. Del Mar Thoughbred Club Pedigree search Open to all breeds!
Carr & Day, and Martin Tea Tree Hoof Oil
What on earth did I ever do before I found this product? It is fantastic! I use it daily on horses in work as the sand tends to dry out their hooves. Tea Tree Oil is well known for it's holistic properties, and quite frankly, I love the smell.
It is also an excellent choice for pre-show ring prep. A clear oil, it works very well on white hooves. For years we used the regular Carr, Day, and Martin Oil (which is next on the list), but it would stain white socks and was too dark for white hooves.
The downside is the expense. A bottle of this (includes applicator brush) is going to run you around $26. You certainly don't want to leave it open or laying around to get knocked over!! Find it at the better tack shops.
Carr & Day, and Martin Hoof Oil
A great product! More affordable than the Tea Tree product. Is a dark color, so not the best choice for white hooves. It does not come with it's own applicator. And it is cheaper! It will run you under $10, but you don't get as much product as the Tea Tree Oil style.
Carr & Day, and Martin Shine
What can I say, we love this company. Their Shine product is economical, and it does not tend to make the hair dry and brittle like other shine products do. And it lasts until you wash it out! I don't recommend spraying a mane you intend to braid though, and certainly not your saddle area!
Carr & Day, and Martin Saddle Soap
Again, great products. Affordable, great quality, they work, what more can you ask for?
Walsh brand Leather products
The best leather halters around. Fantastic leather, excellent worksmanship, and probably the best hardware on halters I've found. I love the brown halters with the white stitching, with a brass name plate. I prefer the Showman halter without the adjustable chin strap. Just a neater appearance.
Affordable. In the $60 - 95 range.
Albion Saddles
The most comfortable saddle around. Endorsed by Klaus Balkenhal. The Comfort is great, and I'm ordering myself a Legend Euro.
Things people need to look out for are those saddles that are not adjustable or flockable--ie the stuffing is made from foam. Cheap, cheap, cheap. All Albions are made to be restuffed as your horse's shape changes through training. The sign of a good saddle!
Another problem friends of mine are having is the channel that runs on the underside of the saddle, where the two pannels meet--they are too narrow. A good saddle will feature a channel that you can easily fit 3 fingers in. The channel is designed so that the saddle does NOT rest on the spinous process of your horse (which causes pain, sway backs, etc). Remember "Wider IS better!!"
Mid priced as saddles go!
Healthy Hair Care Moisturizer
Look for it--it is orange! Great product for horse's that have long, thick tails or manes. My broodmare Ima has a long, thick mane. I keep it healthy with this product. My other horses all have thick tails that I keep healthy with this product.
You have to dilute it (follow directions on the bottle). I suggest using warm/hot water to dilute it. I also use this product all over their bodies, and you won't believe the shine!! Doesn't make the hair slippery like shine products usually do -- this is a moisturizer, not a shine. However, it is oily, and it does attract dirt. I don't use it daily.
Buckey Feeds
We've been using Buckeye Feed for over a year with amazing results. The first thing we noticed was the improvement in the horses' haircoats. Dapples I have seen before, but the shine on the coats was amazing! Next we noticed the improvement in the horses' feet!! Stronger, healthier hooves. We also noticed our horses we no longer licking/eating dirt. That came from feeding the Buckeye Free Choice Mineral. Our horses simply love it!
True story--I took my mare La Championita to the Foal Championships this year with her filly (2000). While I was in the ring with the horses, my friend was watching from the crowd. As we entered, several people around her commented on the amazing shine my mare had on her coat. She just glistened in the sun like a shiney copper penny.
My foals for the past two breeding seasons, as well as my young stock, have been fed oats and Gro N Win. And Win they have!!! Two Grand Champions at the Foal Championships, one Reserve Champion at her first A-2 Hunter Breed Show, and my colt Remarkable has won all his USDF Breed shows this year! We have experienced NO growth problems such as epiphisitis or OCD.
We use the Grass Plus program, however Buckeye offers two feeding programs. One for those feeding Grass hay (called Grass Plus), and one for those feeding Alfalfa/Legume hay (called Alfa Plus). This gives you a totally balanced ration. For foals, we use the Foal Starter along with the Foal Drench (minerals).
Eskadron by Ludger Beerbaum
Mainly used in by the jumper crowd, I've taken these awesome boots to use for my dressage horses. I love the open front jumping boot. It protects the tendon and the splint bone better than any polo wrap ever will! And better yet, no rolling those polos!! If they are dirty, just hose them off and let stand to dry! They feature hook and loop (Velcro) fasteners, around 1-1/2" wide each (2).
They come in fronts and back ankle boots, which I also use. (If a dressage horse is going to whack itself, you can bet it will bang it's ankles). You can get the standard open front boots for about $60 - 65, or the Gel type for $100. They come in a variety of colors--I use white! The rear boots are generally $45 - 50.
Gygax Boots
Gotta love these boots. Leather boots used mainly for jumping. They come either lined in neoprene or with fuzzy lining. I like the fuzzy lining myself (just wash with Woolite). The boots come in a variety of styles, from open front to full brush boots. I like the leather, as it is thick enough to withstand a hard knock to your horse's leg and still protect.
One drawback some people may not like is the fasteners. Elastic fasteners (3 per boot) close with a hook. There are 3 different hooks for the right fit.
Expensive, there's not doubt about it. One pair will run you around $100 or more.
Fantastic breeches. Expensive, but they last a LONG time! Made in Germany, very comfortable. I like the higher waist on them for that great tummy-tucking affect.
One pair's gonna run you $150, more if you want full-seat.
I love my Buccas sheets! They are extremely well made, durable blankets and sheets. The buckles come with little rubber stops to prevent them from coming un-done. Front closure buckles are covered with two straps that features hook and loop closures (Velcro).
I don't care for the lining, as it tends to rub my horses shoulders. I prefer something smooth. This sheet I have picks up and holds the shavings too.
Expensive but worth it. You get what you pay for.
Again, I love these blankets! I have the Wug Plus for Ima, which is full coverage from poll to tail. I have the medium weight which is plenty. I have a Wug for Grace, which features the higher cut on the neck, just below the crest. Again, like Buccas, buckles come with rubber stops. What I really like is the front closure, 2 snaps that are put on a perfect angle. This blanket doesn't budge! I've never had to straighten either one! The lining on the inside is smooth so it doesn't rub much.
From $150 on up.
I'm not the biggest fan of their saddles, but I do love their bridles! Very well made from very good leather. They come in a variety of styles, colors, and also prices.
From $140 on up.
Wow are these some gorgeous trailers! They come in a variety of shapes and styles, but we love them for their look and features. You can order ANYTHING on these trailers. They are made to order, not right off the line (unless you want that). You can select from a variety of windows and styles of windows (drop down versus plain sliding window), you can put ramps on them almost anywhere (we put one on the dressing room in our gooseneck, something you cannot do for a tag-along--it makes loading trunks easier). Fans, lights, polished steel, you name it and they can do it. Colors, striping & decals, etc! We also like the hydraulic jack for the gooseneck--it makes life easier!!
Again, expensive. Generally $15000 for a 2-horse model with dressing room. If you want a gooseneck, you are looking at over $20000 for a 2-horse.
