About the Rheinland Pfalz Saar International:
![]()
![]()
The territory of the Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar developed in southern Germany along the Rhine River. During the Roman Empire the area was principally known as Rheinland Palatinate. In 1755 Duke Christian IV von Pfalz-Zweibrücken established a state stud. More than 100 stallions were traded with Trakehnen. During the Napoleonic wars many stallions were lost to the French. There is even a famous painting of Napoleon riding a grey Zweibrücken stallion named "Fayom." It is said that Napoleon was impressed by the beauty and stamina of the breed. The Pferdezuchterverband Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar e.V. (PRPS) was formed in 1977 and still maintains the registry today.
The brand for the Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar territory was created By Duke Christian. The symbol is the joining of two famous bridges found in the city of Zweibrücken. A replica of the Duke's Crown rests above the bridges. The literal translation of Zweibrücken is "two bridges".

In 1995 when PRPS looked to expand its territory to North America the R.P.S.I. was born, presently located in Riverside, California. R.P.S.I. is not a counterpart, but rather an extension of the original Verband. Following the guidelines of the parent Verband, this registry has many unique qualities.
R.P.S.I. uses only the top educated and qualified representatives directly from the German Verband at its North American Inspections. Using the same representatives here and in Germany assures more correct and ethical Keurings. As in Europe, approved mares and stallions are entered directly into the Mare and Stud Books in Germany, and foals are given a registration number at birth. This number used in the European community and soon in North America, follows the foal's show results, location, and breeding records, if applicable.
Zweibrücken horses are bred for quality of movement, correctness of conformation and clear character for competition and reproduction. We believe that this foundation produces a superior athlete with high trainability and competitiveness.
The RPSI maintains two books for stallions. Studbook I is the 'approved' book for stallions which have fulfilled all of the requirements (pedigree, scores, and performance) for full approval. Studbook II is for stallions who are recorded (NOT approved) so their offspring may receive a certificate of pedigree.
Up to 1990 only approved (Gekoert) stallions were allowed to be used for breeding. It was forbidden by German Government law to breed with any other stallions.
Since 1990 the rules of breeding of livestock has changed following the rules of the European Community. Since then there are now 2 different books: Stallion Book I and Stallion Book II.
Stallion Book I: The sire must be Stallion Book I or eligible and the Dam must be Main Mare Book/Mare Book I or eligible. A score at the inspection of 60 points or higher allows the stallion to be entered into this book.
Stallion Book II: A stallion gets RECORDED (NOT APPROVED) in this book when:
1. The sire is not in Book I or not eligible for this book.
2. And/or the dam is not in Main Mare Book/Mare Book I or not eligible.
3. The score at the inspection is less than 60 points.
The following statement applies only to Stud Book II---the word APPROVED should not be used or interpreted in any context with regard to stallions RECORDED in Stallion Book II.
Only the offspring of approved stallions in Stallion Book I and recorded stallions in Stallion Book II are eligible to receive sire's full pedigree documentation in the passport.
